My hopes for Lowell's art scene is to develop a First Saturday model. Many cities have such a day, every month, where galleries, shops and restaurants schedule special events. The events overlap, and it's GREAT! Local residents and guests alike expect a day of visiting multiple venues, and the events are not viewed as competitive but rather as collaborative. Before moving to Lowell in August, I lived in Jamaica Plain where First Thursdays are a huge part of the neighborhood's culture. I truly believe that Lowell is the perfect city to adopt a tradition like this, and am hoping to help organize other businesses/organizations in that direction.
